Sint Augustinus van Hippo (354-430 nC) was ‘n Christelike leier, filosoof en skrywer uit Noord-Afrika. Sy outobiografiese boek, Die belydenisse van st. Augustinus, en ‘n latere werk, Die stad van God, het ‘n belangrike invloed op die verdieping van die Christelike geloof gehad.

Sy standpunte:

• Die mensdom is aan Adam verbind – dus erfsonde.
• God se genade is soewerein – dus uitverkiesing.
• Die mens is in homself verlore en dood – tensy God hom red.
• Saligheid alleen deur Jesus Christus.
• Hy het Pelagius direk teengestaan.

Voor sy bekering tot die Christendom was Augustinus van Hippo ‘n aanhanger van Manigeïsme.
