Aanhalings – Logika/Filosofie/Ateïsme

If the solar system was brought about by an accidental collision, then the appearance of organic life on this planet was also an accident, and the whole evolution of Man was an accident too. If so, then all our present thoughts are mere accidents—the accidental by-product of the movement of atoms. And this holds for the thoughts of the materialists and astronomers as well as for anyone else’s. But if their thoughts—i.e. of materialism and astronomy—are merely accidental by-products, why should we believe them to be true? I see no reason for believing that one accident should be able to give me a correct account of all the other accidents. It’s like expecting that the accidental shape taken by the splash when you upset a milkjug should give you a correct account of how the jug was made and why it was upset.

Joseph Goebbels
(Een van Adolf Hitler se naaste en mees toegewyde vertrouelinge)

“As jy ’n leuen lank genoeg, hard genoeg en gereeld genoeg vertel, sal mense jou glo.”
(“If you tell a lie long enough, loud enough and often enough, people will believe it.”)
“Die waarheid hou vir altyd, die leuen net ’n oomblik.” – Bybel (Spr 12:19)

William Lane Craig vs Peter Atkins: (Can science account for everything?)

Atkins: Do you deny that science cannot account for everything?

Craig: Yes, I do deny that science cannot account for everything.

Atkins: So what can’t it account for?

Craig: Had you brought that up in the debate I had a number of examples I was going to give. I think there are a good number of things that cannot be scientifically proven but were all rational to accept.

Atkins: Such as?

Craig: Let me list five:

  1. Logical and mathematical truths cannot be proven by science. Science presupposes science and maths. So that to try to proof them with science and math would be arguing in a circle.
  2. Metaphysical truths, like there are other minds other than my own, or that the external world is real, or the past was not created five minutes ago with the appearance of age, are rational beliefs that cannot be scientifically proven.
  3. Ethical beliefs about statements of value are not accessible by the scientific method. You can’t show by science whether the Nazi scientists in the camps did anything evil as opposed to the scientists in Western democracies.
  4. Aesthetics judgements, number 4, cannot be accessed by the scientific method because the beautiful, like the good, cannot be scientifically proven.
  5. And finally, most remarkably, would be science itself. Science cannot be justified by the scientific method. Science is permeated with improvable assumptions. For example in the special theory of relativity, the whole theory hinches on the assumption that the speed of light is constant in a one way direction between two points A and B. But that strictly cannot be proven. We simply have to assume that in order to hold the theory.

None of these beliefs can be scientifically proven, yet they are accepted by all of us and we’re rational in doing so.

Atheism: The belief that there was nothing and that nothing then magically exploded for no reason at all under the influence and control of nothing. From this explosion came everything and everything rearranged itself for no reason under control of nothing and became self-replicating units that turned into intelligent beings that are capable of explaining the origin of everything – from nothing. That makes perfect sense!
